1Map the damaged zones, identify paint/plaster type where possible and compare hard, sound areas with loose or discoloured areas.2Photograph where the salts form, brush a small test area clean and observe whether the deposits return and under which weather conditions.3Record moisture or visual condition at fixed points over several days or weeks instead of judging from a single reading.4Inspect edges, service penetrations and accessible cavities. If a lining is suspect, document before opening and use appropriate precautions.
