Treat the timing and location of moisture as evidence. Rain-linked damp, a wet wall–floor junction, salts and a persistent low-level moisture line can point to different mechanisms, so they should not be collapsed into one generic ‘damp basement’ diagnosis.

What matters before choosing a solution

  1. Describe when the problem appears and where it is strongest.
  2. Include building age, ground conditions and photos inside and outside.
  3. Separate the symptom from the suspected cause and report what was tried.

Assessment

Damp basement & water ingress

Treat the timing and location of moisture as evidence. Rain-linked damp, a wet wall–floor junction, salts and a persistent low-level moisture line can point to different mechanisms, so they should not be collapsed into one generic ‘damp basement’ diagnosis.

1Map the damaged zones, identify paint/plaster type where possible and compare hard, sound areas with loose or discoloured areas.2Compare the same area before rain, during prolonged rain and 12–24 hours afterwards. Also photograph gutters, downpipes, paving and ground slope outside.3Look for active seepage, wet joints, seasonal variation and any information about groundwater, drainage depth or previous flooding.4Measure or photograph the outside level relative to the basement floor and window sills, and note whether surfaces slope toward or away from the building.
