Measuring basement moisture: a useful log, not just one number

Room humidity, surface temperature and moisture inside a wall are different measurements. Keeping them separate makes your evidence much easier to interpret.

Set up repeatable locations

Mark the measurement points on a sketch: one representative room-air location, the affected area and a comparable area without visible damage. Keep the room-air sensor away from direct sun, a radiator, the immediate fan outlet and splashing. Photograph where you measured so someone else can repeat it.

For an outdoor comparison, use a suitably protected, shaded location. Measure indoors and outdoors close together in time. If two sensors sit together and disagree, record that difference before relying on small differences between rooms.

Turn readings into a question

When checking condensation, compare the measured surface temperature with calculated dew point. The example in our summer guide shows why a lower outdoor humidity percentage can still be misleading. Keep the raw temperature and humidity values as well as the calculation.

If the result is near the condensation boundary, allow for sensor accuracy and changes between readings. The calculator's two-degree caution band is an explanatory margin, not a building standard or a universal safety threshold.

Before covering or finishing a surface

Ask the person specifying the finish which moisture test, location, acceptance criterion and recording method the system requires. A dry-looking surface and a few days of lower room humidity are not the same as documented suitability for the next layer.
